The Story
VINCENT VAN GOGH IRISES
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) created over 2100 works including 860 oil paintings, remarkably within a decade. Dedicated to his art, it was a lifeline in between increasing psychotic episodes.
A year before his death, he admitted himself into an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France. There van Gogh began painting Irises, a piece defined by blue flowers, orange marigolds, green leaves and red soil. When complete, he sent it to his brother Theo, who submitted it for exhibition at the 1889 Salon des Independents in Paris.
Our lantern features a detail from this exuberant work.
