The Story

Emperor penguins, the largest penguin species, stand nearly 4 feet tall and weigh up to 88 lbs! These incredible divers can hold their breath for over 20 minutes while feasting on fish, krill, and squid.

Each winter, they trek 70 miles inland to breed. The female lays one egg, which Dad incubates while fasting for months. Once the fluffy chick hatches, both parents care for it until it’s 6 months old, then they head back to the ocean. The chicks instinctively journey to the sea, where they’ll grow for four years before starting the cycle anew. Huddling in colonies of 5,000, they keep warm in frigid temps as low as -50°C—brr!
